Since 2009, the Los Angeles-area collective that is Fol Chen has created their signature sound from field recordings, an electronic junk drawer, and warped vocal transmissions. A little out there? Sure, but it's meant to be. Live, their artistic reach is even wider, with a propensity for interactive projects - like the Tetrafol, a motion-based sound toy developed with musical interface pioneers Monome. Fol Chen calls their genre "Opera House," a name lifted from Malcolm McLaren but recoined as beat-driven electronica with grand, operatic gestures and lyrically dense storytelling. It's fitting. And definitely worth checking out.
