Cities with long harsh winters (I'm looking in your direction, Montréal) tend to have incestuous music scenes. That's cause you need to stay inside to keep warm. And, once inside, you're gonna need to amuse yourself somehow. Perhaps this explains Chicago's tangled web of bands and musicians. And the Sea and Cake. With connections to Tortoise, Gastr del Sol, Shrimp Boat, The Coctails, and a few solo performers, The Sea and Cake represents what Chicago indie rock does best - mixing a little of everything into something completely different.
